Casa das Histórias Paula Rego

    Location: Lisbon, Portugal

    Architect: Eduardo Souto de Moura

    Year: 2009

A Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, a project by the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, takes up, in a contemporary spirit, aspects of the historical architecture of the region. It is distinguished immediately by the landscape for the two pyramidal structures of the equal size and its red-pigmented concrete. The project corresponds to the wishes of the artist, to whom we owe the choice of the architect, meets the many requirements of museological functionality, without forgetting the good reception of visitors. The differing volumes which compose the building configure four wings, subdividing them inside into sequential rooms, arranged around a higher central volume, which corresponds to the temporary exhibition hall. The interior, in neutral tones, paved with blue marble from Cascais, has, in addition to the technical and service areas, 750 m2 of exhibition spaces, a shop, a cafeteria with a terrace opening onto a leafy garden and a 200-seat auditorium. The terrain and the preexisting trees are also fundamental elements of the space.
