Two Houses in Ponte de Lima

    Architect:

    Eduardo Souto de Moura

    Location:

    Ponte de Lima, Portugal

These two houses in Ponte de Lima, in the north of the country, are among the first projects of Eduardo SOUTO DE MOURA, after leaving the cabinet of Alvaro SIZA. This small-scale project is one of the most emblematic and houses have become a reference and the place a place of “pilgrimage” for students and architects from around the world who are passing through.
The thing took such proportions (entrusted me the gardener on the day of my visit of the place in 2007), that the owners following the affluence were forced to take security measures and live only seasonally the places.

Originally, these houses were in a secluded place, in the “green zone of Portugal” not far from the national parks and reserves. For a good ten years, the whole area has become very popular with wealthy families, and an “architectural laboratory” has emerged in the area. The so-called “Golf Residence” and “Axis Ponte De Lima Golf Resort” a few meters have become a set of architectural constructions, all more impressive than each other, or students of architecture take pleasure to hang out.

This small project and notament the house following the natural slope of the land, remains one of my favorites. By its pure simplicity, its elegance, the undeniable quality of the materials used (granitic stones of the region, marbles of the region, concrete, glass, wood of the region and metal) and reaches a kind of environmental minimalism characteristic of the region. all of its architectural production (ref: the house in moledo, houses in Matosinhos or ecore stadium braga). Eduardo Souto de Moura considers that the concrete is an artificial stone also, for the construction of the stadium of Braga, it digs the ground, the quarry to make the foundations and recupère this same rock by grinding it to make the constitutive base of the concrete which gave life to the stadium body.
